An interesting thing is that if you asked Average Metal-Guy 10-15 years ago what he thought of New Renaissance Records your answer would more often than not be something like "That cheap label with all those crappy Thrash bands? Ha ha, no thanx..". With the rise of old-school Thrash Metal in popularity as well as the cultification of classic US Metal in later years, it seems that NRR is finally getting the credit and praise it deserves. Sure, there's plenty of mediocre stuff in their discography and the Immortal Masterpieces are few and far in between, but they had an edge and there's plenty of hidded goodies to be found, especially on the compilations.

I'm not gonna do an essay on the history of the label because it's all out there. This wikipedia-article covers the basics, and this interview done by the Voices From The Dark Side webzine is a bit more in-depth.

Now for some comments about this list:

  • For the moment I'm only covering the classic "pre-Ann-goes-to-law-school" era of NRR, i.e. 1985-1991. As fascinating as it may be that they started up again in the late 90's, reissued CDs just isn't what this part of The Corroseum is about. Maybe later when I've run out of other labels to cover. In the meantime you can always check out their brand new home page.

  • Somewhere around 1988-1989 their discography becomes very hard to follow. They did some albums in Europe through SPV (listed at the bottom), as well as a few obscure CDs, but I'm having difficulties figuring out exactly which albums where released back then and not later, what the original cover art was, what index# they carried etc.. Help!

  • NRR02-NRR09 never carried an NRR-serial since they were distributed by Greenworld during this period. I just added those numbers (in parenthesis) to make their discography easier to follow. Greenworld Distribution carried a lot of Metal bands themselves at the time, both on their motherlabel Greenworld Records as well as distributing other, smaller record labels. Those releases have absolutely nothing to do with NRR though.

  • Most (if not all?) old NRR releases also came out on cassette, some with bonus tracks. The serials were the same but with an NRC-prefix. A few even came out on CD as far back as 1987, same serials but with an NRCD-prefix.

That should be all for now.

Had to include this curiosity for all the die-hard NRR-fans. It's a "tape magazine" issued by NRR in the early 90's (or late 80's?). Don't know if more issues were made. All info welcomed.
